3.1. Student Independence Movement Memorial Tower
Memorial Tower (39 meters high)
Description: The flat appearance was made while thinking of the power created when the public assembles at one central point and symbolizes the will of the united patriotic martyrs during the Gwangju Student Independence Movement, and the distant view was made to have an image of a torch burning with harmony of the standing stones. In contrast to other memorial towers where people can freely enter between the standing stones of the memorial tower, the concept for a memorial tower where visitors can actually experience it was introduced.

Front-left sculpture (height 5.85 meters)
Description: Centering on the sculptured figure wishing for independence while holding the Korean flag in the center of the disc, depicts the images of young students resisting the Japanese empire.Front-right sculpture (height 5.7 meters)
Description: Centering on the sculptured figure sending off a dove in hopes of peace of the nation in the center of the disc, depicts the images of student patriotic martyrs fighting to recover national independence. Left side (Height 3.9 meters)
Description: Give shape to the image of the Korean people gathering and praying with the Mt. Baekdu in the backdrop to succeed the spirit of the student independence movement and to revive the national spirit. Right side (height 3.9 meters)
Description: Give shape to the image of the rally to place the Korean flag on top of Mt. Baekdu so that the nation can become one and to succeed the spirit of the student independence movement, and achieve peaceful reunification.Back-left sculpture (height 5.2 meters)
